Custom Fit Knee™ Replacement
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a chronic, degenerative joint disease affecting more than 20 million Americans (Arthritis Foundation). It can occur anywhere in the body, but most often appears in weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips and spine.
In patients with osteoarthritis, cartilage around the joints starts to stiffen, causing it to lose its “shock-absorbing” quality. This causes surrounding tendons and ligaments to strain, which can lead to pain and instability.
Over time, the cartilage can actually erode away, leaving exposed bone. This “bone on bone” condition leads to extreme pain and a significant decrease in mobility.
First-line treatments for osteoarthritis include physical therapy and prescription medication. However, as the disease inevitably progresses, your doctor may recommend total knee replacement as a solution.
